DIFFERENT KIND OF PERFORMANCE
Youth Boss Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 1-0 victory over Rochdale:
"It was another game where we had four or five clear cut chances, but we couldn't take them.
You start to wonder whether it means you'll end up hanging on, and it got to be a bit like that.
We started off brightly enough, but we never really hit top gear at all. To be fair to Rochdale, they made it very hard for us. They've only won one game all season and they didn't want to lose today. It turned in to a bit of a fight for us.
We couldn't really get it down and play our game, but we still did ok.
Gary Madine scored a terrific goal on the half hour. He received the ball inside the box, dropped his shoulder to go one way, spun the other way, and then smashed it in to the bottom corner. It really was a fantastic goal.
Andy Cook had a couple of chances to put the game out of sight, but he didn't manage to finish them off, and I think he was disappointed with that.
We went in to half time with plenty still to do, and the game should have been over and done with by then, if we're honest. I should have been able to make a few substitutions and look after people, with Tuesday night in mind, but I didn't have that luxury.
We had control of most of the second half, but we missed three more really good chances. As I keep saying, if we keep doing this then we'll come away one day having lost a game that we should have won easily.
We got away with it in this one because they never looked like scoring. We played well overall, but we can play much, much better. They roughed us up a bit after the break, which is fair enough, because it's another type of football that we have to get used to and play. It became a bit of a scrap, and it probably would have been different if we'd got that second goal. To come through one like that can be a confidence boost in itself, though, so there's plenty to take from it.
It's nice to have a whinge and a twine when you've won a game, but it's another thoroughly deserved clean sheet, and it's another 3 points that puts us right up there.
We've got a tough game on Tuesday, now, and if we can win that then we'll have Sheffield Wednesday at home. If I'm going to be completely honest then I would have wanted that to be one of the big clubs, at their place, but this is still a very good tie for us. They have a very good Academy over there, so they will be an extremely good team, so we can look forward to that. It would be interesting to see how we cope with them, if we can go through.
Mind you, let's not forget that we have Mansfield to play first. They will be thinking about playing Sheffield Wednesday as well, so we have to go there and do a job. It won't be easy, because they are winning as many as we are, so it will come down to who approaches it properly and who does the job come Tuesday."
United - Carson, Brown, Wordsworth, Aldred, Duffy, Dalton, Hindmarch, Blake (Wood 70), Tinnion (Lakeland 75), Cook, Madine. Subs - Mitchell, Dowson.
Note - John Seaton was due to be on the subs bench but he picked up an illness on Saturday morning that ruled him out of the game. Hopefully, he should be fine for Tuesday.
