STANLEY RESERVES 4 - 2 UNITED RESERVES
Danny Carlton and Luke Joyce scored for the Cumbrians but some scruffy goals allowed Stanley to steal the win.
We spoke to Eric Kinder shortly after full time to get his reaction:
"We came up against a team that was full of players who had experience of Non-League football tonight, and they were physically stronger than the young team that we had out on the field in many areas.
Having said that, I thought we played well overall. We didn't defend that well at times, but we tried to play our game and we actually played some very good football.
We went one up through Luke Joyce, when he capitalised on a mistake that they made inside their own box. He made it his and he bundled it in for us, which I was pleased about.
We looked good for the lead following that, but then we allowed them to equalise when we fell asleep at the back. It was a poor goal from our perspective, and one that we had a chat about at half time.
I was very pleased with how we reacted, because we were back in front almost straight away. It was the kind of goal that we expect from Danny Carlton now, because he put the defenders under pressure after they misjudged a through ball, and he smashed it across the keeper and in to the bottom corner.
Again, we were looking comfortable until the back four got themselves in to a bit of a muddle. Two of the young lads got themselves caught out by being on the wrong side of the attacker and they got their second equaliser right on the stroke of half time.
In the second half we created four or five really good chances. Shaun Vipond hit the bar, Danny Carlton got a yard of space and put one just wide, Darren Campion caught a beauty that was blocked, and Steven Hindmarch had a couple of half chances that might have gone in on another night. We were looking at it and thinking that everything was ok, and then they hit one from about 30 yards that spilled out of our keeper's hands and they had someone there on the follow up to force it over the line.
We were chasing the game after that, and they finished it off in the 88th minute. That was another long distance shot that took a horrible deflection, and the ball looped up and in to the back of the net leaving Chris Howarth with no chance.
We know that we want to play better, and we want to pass it much better, and we also know that we have to become much harder to play against. The encouraging thing is that it was a much better performance than our last outing.
Darren Campion was outstanding tonight. He's only a young lad himself, but he put in a very good performance, and he handled himself very well. We basically have a Youth team back four, and it is a steep learning curve for them. We have young players all over the pitch, and they have all seen Danny Carlton run himself in to the ground for the team yet again. He is full of enthusiasm, and he wants to win every game he plays in.
Of course we are disappointed with the result, but the scoreline wasn't really a fair reflection of what we did tonight.
I feel sorry for Shaun Vipond, because he has been a silly lad. He got a red card in the 92nd minute of the game, and he shouldn't have got himself involved at all. It was deep in to time added on, we were 4-2 down, and he has gone in with an awful tackle that left the Referee with no choice. He's worked really hard to get in to the first team squad following his injury and, the moment he has achieved that, he finds himself facing a needless three match ban. He will now have to learn the hard way, but I really do feel sorry for him, because he gives you absolutely everything.
Dan Wordsworth continues to show promise and Steven Hindmarch had a good game up front. When he is on his game he can be a real handful, and he is picking things up from Danny Carlton, which is good. Greg Abbott gave Tom Aldred a few bits of advice at half time, and we were delighted to see him take that on board and have a really good game after the break. He was getting himself too close to people, and they were spinning him and turning him too easily, but he rectified that. He's only 16, the lad, and Reserve football is a different level altogether.
I'd like to mention that Andy Cook came on for his debut at this level. Steve Hindmarch picked up a bit of a dead leg, so we made that change, and Andy did well.
The message from me is, like I say, that we need to be much harder to play against. We're not getting close enough when we need to and we don't always react as we should. I'm possibly being picky, because there are real signs of improvement, but we will definitely take ourselves to the next level if we can get these things right."
Team: Howarth, Brown, Wordsworth, Aldred, Campion, Vipond, Joyce, McDermott, Dalton, Hindmarch (Cook 75), Carlton.
