LET OURSELVES DOWN
Eric Kinder spoke about the Reserve defeat at home to Chester:
"I was disappointed today. I didn't think we got close enough to them.
We started off with a diamond formation, which they got to grips with pretty quickly, so we changed to a flat 4-4-2.
The reason we played a diamond was down to the personnel. In Reserve team football you don't pick your best players, you get a group of players who need to play and then you work out the best way to play with what you've got. Because we didn't really have wide players, we decided to go that way. Obviously they got to grips with it and handled it, and they were a bit more experienced than us.
We played better after we changed, but even then we never really competed as we should, so it was disappointing.
We will take anything except lack of commitment and enthusiasm, and I thought there was a bit of that today, and we got punished for it.
My big selling point to Youth team players, when I try and bring them in to this club, is that they will get the chance to play in the Reserves because of the number of senior professionals we've got.
That is our selling point, and we had a very young side out today, particularly at the end.
A lot of the lads were first years - Jonny Blake, Tom Aldred, Connor Tinnion, Gary Madine who has been around for 12 months now but he's still only just turned 17, Dan Wordsworth, who I thought was probably our best player, and he's just turned 17 as well.
We had Shaun Vipond, a very committed player, playing out of position, so we swapped him back to midfield later on, and he was probably our best midfielder when we moved him there.
We have played Shaun at right back for a couple of games, but today we felt we were missing him in midfield. We had a right back on the field playing in midfield, in Jonny Blake, who has been playing with the Youth team in central midfield, so we swapped them back and I thought Jonny did quite well when he went to right back.
Tom Aldred did quite well when he came on. Darren Campion had a bad day today, but the massive positive out of that was he walked straight in to the dressing room after the match and apologised to everybody. When someone does that there isn't a lot you can do. I thought it was a brave thing for him to do. He didn't hide on the pitch either, so he'll be alright.
Gary Madine is a handful, but he needs to learn how to hold up the ball a bit better. We talked about that after the game. He has his opinions does Gary, which is good, and he voices them in the right manner.
As a coach you have to listen to your players opinions, then of course you go by the way you want to do it.
Gary understands that as a centre forward you have to hold the ball up, that's one of your main jobs, holding the ball up and bringing other people into play. Their fourth goal came from a situation where Gary didn't hold it up, and they went through and scored, and that's what happens. He's still got some learning to do, but he'll get there and he's going to be a bigger handful as he learns.
Connor Tinnion, if I'm being brutally honest, probably isn't strong enough for Reserve team football yet, but at least he came on and showed some bottle. The beauty of signing for this club as a Youth team player is that you are going to get thrown in to the deep end. For his little half hour cameo I thought he showed some bottle, he was brave enough to get the ball and take people on. For me he's about 6 months away from Reserve football, but we brought him on to give us some balance and he didn't do himself any harm.
We changed the keepers at half time, which was planned, to give them each 45 minutes.
Danny Carlton just loves to play football. You could put Danny Carlton in our U16s and he'd play in exactly the same way. He didn't want to come off, didn't like being brought off, and he was brought off because he's in the first team squad to fly down to Bournemouth on Friday. It's a pat on the back when you get brought off after 60 minutes, but Danny can't see that and that's a massive plus for him, one of his strengths. He's ok now but he growls and snarls as he walks past when you take him off, and you can't help having a chuckle to yourself. You just wish that everyone had the commitment and enthusiasm he has. If the youngsters look at him and follow him then they won't go far wrong. The senior pro's who played today need to have a little bit of a look at themselves. This was their game of football. If they don't play for the first team on a Saturday then they've got to get their 90 minutes on a Wednesday afternoon, or whenever we play. If they don't take their chance then they are not going to take the next step. That's what they want to do, I know they all want to play in the first team, but they've got to do it in the Reserves, and if they don't then I don't know how they expect to move on.
I've talked about that to them, and they're good lads and they listened and, hopefully, they'll take it on board.
I'd imagine the players are feeling a little bit disheartened now, and so they should be. I felt we let ourselves down as a group."
