PLEASED WITH THE COMMITMENT
United Coach Eric Kinder gave us his reaction to the Cumberland Cup game:
"Overall I was delighted, especially with the younger players. The junior lads need to be more competitive, and you'll get that playing against Non-League sides.
Workington are a Conference North side who have got in to the play offs, and they are ex-pro's who know what the game is about. Yes, they probably aren't as fit as our lads, but the knowledge that they have helps them out. Our team being so young, I was really delighted with the commitment and the effort, and from where I was it was a very good game.
We started poorly, and I didn't think we got close enough to them, and we gave them too much time to play. I didn't think we did the horrible side of the game enough, pressing and closing down, getting in to people's faces and making them pass it quick. We didn't pass it particularly well, and it took us about 20 minutes to settle down.
Their first was a learning curve for Dan Wordsworth, as in these games you don't get that much time. He's paid the penalty and we conceded, but we came back strongly and I thought we should have come in with the lead at half time.
Probably Neale McDermott should have done better, Arnie could have scored, Gary Madine should have scored with his header and, to be fair, our goal was terrific but we didn't play as well as I know we could in the first half. We just seemed to want to stroll around and not do the ugly work.
I have no complaints in the second half. I thought we were magnificent.
We were basically a Youth team, and that game will hold us in good stead as we develop because if you are going to play first team football then you have to be competitive. Sometimes Youth games don't give you that edge, but that game certainly did.
It was a bit unfortunate with the penalty, and tempers get raised, especially when it's just a few minutes away from the end of extra time. Dan Kirkup reckons he didn't touch him, he let him go past, but when someone runs in to the box with pace it's always a hard decision for the referee.
I'm disappointed with the result, of course I am. I'm also disappointed with Arnie getting involved. I feel sorry for him because, as a professional, he has done magnificent for us tonight. His enthusiasm for the game was outstanding and, unfortunately, through something silly he's probably now banned for the first game of next season, which isn't good for him.
Overall, as I say, I'm pleased with them. I just hope we can carry this on to next season, play a bit of football but be strong. If I can fit a Non-League team in to my pre-season friendlies then I think I will do that, because it is a different level of game. From tonight, it was a good run out, and it would have been nice to get the silverware, but it's not too bad an end to the season."
