OUR LUCK HAS TO CHANGE SOON
More from scoring legend Hugh McIlmoyle:
I was a bit disappointed with Saturday's game as nothing went our way at all.
Southend got off to a flying start and we didn't really recover until half time. I suspect the lads had a real pep talk and that, combined with the change in formation, really helped us to get back into it.
It was a different team that came out in the second half and, when we got the equaliser, then I thought we were going to go on and win it.
David Raven going off changed things again - you see tackles like that quite often and nothing happens; just give them a foul and that's it. It wasn't a great tackle by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly wasn't life threatening!
The Southend players put on a good act throughout the match. Anyway, that changed the game - it's always difficult when you go down to ten men, but if one of your defenders goes off then it's the worst scenario. Scott Dobie got pulled back, away from his attacking role, and he looked like a striker playing right back. Paul Thirlwell came on but Southend then seemed to target the left hand side, and that's where their goal came from.
All credit to the Southend full-back. He put a good ball in for the first goal and nine times out of ten you would expect someone to clear it, but the ball just went straight in. The keeper can't move really because someone could have got a touch and sent it past him. Southend actually pushed the ball about well and they played with confidence, just like a team in form.
It's always disappointing when you get mugged in the last minute. Losing is never good, but when it's in the last minute then it's a bitter pill to take.
I really thought, throughout the second half, that we were going to win it - even when we went down to ten men, I thought the effort that our lads were putting in would be enough. We certainly deserved something out of the game, but it wasn't to be. Nothing seems to be going right for us - the referee's decision making was poor and Southend did seem to over-elaborate things.
On the whole though, it's not changed the situation very much. We're still in that second place and there's twenty-odd teams would swap places with us right now. Things haven't gone our way recently but we are still in pole position. We've got two games to go, and if we can win them then we're up - it might even be that we only need to win one of them.
We're still in with a shout! Our luck has to change soon.
