DAVE WILKES ON THE YOUTH CUP
Dave Wilkes gives his thoughts after the FA Youth Trophy game.
On paper this was a really tough game. I'm really pleased with how the lads played. I've spoken to Jerry Murphy, Huddersfields Head of Youth and he said we fully deserved the result.
In this competition we always seem to give the other team a goal start and we didn't disappoint with this one. It was like highway robbery really because we had made so many chances and forced them back. Our set pieces were very good and we put them under a lot of pressure. Then we go and gift them a goal just on the stroke of half time.
We asked for a response in the second half and we certainly got it, the lads came out and had a real go at them and got their just deserts with a goal. Again it was a great delivery from James Earl and a good header from Dan Kirkup. James had been putting them under pressure all through the game with his deliveries and this one paid off.
After the goal we pushed on again and the game opened up a lot. Once we get our noses in front with a great strike from Rob Bainbridge I just had the feeling we could hold them and win.
Great credit to the lads, every one of them, even young Jake, when he came on played his part, he has a lot of pace and a great appetite to get forward. Each and every one of them worked their socks off and I'm really glad for them. You could see at the final whistle how much it meant to them.
We have drawn Sheffield United in the next round, which is another really tough game but when you get to this stage you don't expect any easy games. Lets hope the journey continues.
