WESTWOOD GETS PFA 2UP AWARD
The plaudits have been pouring in for Fernando Torres all season, and no more so than in the last month as the Liverpool striker has been hailed by givemefootball readers as their star man in a magical March.
Torres' performances, as well as his goals and blossoming partnership with Steven Gerrard, made him a clear winner in the PFA 2UP Fans' awards for the last month during which he plundered an impressive seven Premier League and Champions League goals.
The announcement of Torres' award comes at a time when he and his Liverpool colleagues are preparing to go into Euro battle with Arsenal, starting at the Emirates tonight.
In the Championship, Adriano Basso's contribution to Bristol City's remarkable rise to the top of the table - within touching distance of the Promised Land of the Premier League - has been acknowledged by fans who made him their Player of the Month for March.
The Brazilian keeper was initially signed by the Robins in October 2005 as back-up to number one of the time Steve Phillips, but he quickly made a first team place his own and has been a regular virtually ever since.
The former Woking shot-stopper had a three-month trial with Premier League giants Arsenal before he was snapped up by manager Gary Johnson whose decision to take a chance on Basso has certainly paid dividends, and then some.
Another keeper has taken the honours in League One where Keiren Westwood has been rewarded for a string of fine performances between the sticks for promotion-chasing Carlisle.
Until their defeat against Nottingham Forest last night, Carlisle had racked up a club record 14 consecutive home wins to cement their place in the top two - and Westwood has more than played his part. He kept an impressive five clean sheets in March as Carlisle maintained their promotion push.
Bradford's veteran defender David Wetherall has provided proof, if needed, that you are never too old to pick up awards - and he will be delighted with this honour of being named Fans' Player of the Month in League Two.
The Bantam's club record signing (£1.4million) when he joined the club from Leeds in 1999, the 37-year-old is still going strong in the twilight of his career, and Wetherall's wealth of experience is proving invaluable in the Bradford defence as they look to stabilise their position in League Two.
