Luke Joyce made his first start of the season in midfield, deputising for the suspended Paul Thirlwell, in the only change to a side that were looking for their first run of 3 straight victories of the campaign.
Russell Slade was able to welcome club captain Terry Skiverton back in to the fold, as he looked to maintain his excellent away form, having lost just 3 games on the road all season.
It was a good start from United, with Jeff Smith causing problems with two floated corners in the 4th minute. The first was won by Aranalde, and his nod down saw Danny Livesey volley the ball low through a sea of legs. Hawley was quickly on to the rebound, but Mildenhall and Jones combined to force it wide.
The second delivery eventually found its way out to Joyce, 25 yards out, and his accurate cross back in was met on the rise by Hawley, who sent his header in to the side netting.
Yeovil were struggling to find a foothold and were almost made to pay on 11 minutes when Cohen diverted a crossfield pass in to the path of Kevin Gall. His cross brought a corner that Jeff Smith delivered, finding the near post run of Aranalde. A neat header had Mildenhall diving to tip it over the bar as he made a fine save to keep his side in the game.
More good football in the 15th minute brought a wonderful pass from Garner that released Aranalde in to the box. His low, driven cross was inches away from the outstretched toe of Hawley, and Kev Gall was unable to prevent it from drifting harmlessly away at the back post.
The Glovers finally crafted a chance of their own in the 23rd minute when Davies flicked on a throw at the near post. Stewart won it, but his firm header dropped on to the roof of the net with Westwood watching it all the way. Chris Cohen then drilled a left footed shot in to Murphy's midriff, bringing a half-hearted penalty appeal as he swept the ball clear.
Kev Gall was disappointed with himself on the half hour when Paul Murray battled for a loose ball in midfield, clipping it over the top. The United wide-man was unmarked, but rattled his volley from the edge of the box well wide as it screwed off his shin.
Gall was close again in the 34th minute when he raced on to a back post cross from the left, controlling it with his first touch and smashing a volley towards the bottom corner with his second. Mildenhall got the slightest of touches to help it on its way for a corner.
Joe Garner could have opened his United account in the next Carlisle attack when Gall, who had crept over to the left, whipped in a curling cross towards the penalty spot. The young striker reacted brightly, but sent his bullet header the wrong side of the upright.
It was a first half dominated by Carlisle and they spurned another good opportunity to score when a long throw from Aranalde bounced freely across the face of goal, with Gall closest to putting it away.
The deserved lead came in the 43rd minute when Jeff Smith floated a free kick right down the heart of the Yeovil defence. A half clearance fell nicely for Gall, 16 yards out, and he immediately fed Joe Garner with an intelligent pass that the young forward was able to smash in to the back of the net, registering his first ever goal in League football.
Half Time: United 1 - 0 Yeovil
The second half started with a scare for Carlisle when Cohen robbed Raven of possession in midfield. Best showed for it, but he was always leaning back and thundered his 20 yard shot over the bar.
The Glovers got themselves back on level terms in the 49th minute with a lightning quick break that carved the United midfield open. Wayne Gray overlapped down the Carlisle left, finding himself in acres of space in the box as he dug it over the advancing Westwood and in to the bottom corner of the net.
It was a better spell for the visitors, who had been forced in to 3 changes within the space of 5 minutes due to injury, but Karl Hawley was unlucky with a rushed header in the 51st minute when he got on to a Raven cross.
Steve Mildenhall almost embarrassed himself moments later when he came out of his area to deal with a ball over the top. Swinging his leg at it, he miscued badly, but Hawley was on his heels and Guyet was able to clear.
Another flap from the Yeovil keeper in the 63rd minute saw him fingertip the ball at Gall who, 8 yards out, was unable to set himself for the volley. It ricocheted to Raven, but he went for a cross, that was easily cleared, with the crowd screaming for a shot.
A lapse of concentration from a Sweeney free kick in the 72nd minute brought a close range finish from Leon Best as the big striker was able to leap unimpeded to nod the ball out of Westwood's hands and in to the bottom of the net.
Joe Garner had two 19 yard shots blocked as United tried to increase the pressure, but Yeovil were defending in numbers after snatching their unlikely lead.
Jeff Smith watched another set piece delivery go begging on 84 minutes as he sent the ball in to the danger area from a 30 yard kick, but Skiverton got the vital block that prevented Hawley from spinning on it. The Glovers survived another Aranalde long throw by the skin of their teeth but it took a marvellous save from Mildenhall in the 86th minute to keep Garner at bay.
The 18-year-old trapped a Johann Smith cross on his chest before belting a left foot volley towards the bottom corner. The Yeovil stopper was down quickly, getting his right hand to it to stop the certain goal.
Jeff Smith continued to tease the defence with his pinpoint deliveries, but Leon Best grabbed his second when he stayed patient on the attack before picking his spot with a 22 yard shot that left Westwood diving in despair.
Chris Cohen sealed the victory for Russell Slade with a clinical finish deep in to time added on when Aranalde lost possession in the Yeovil half, allowing the visitors to streak forward. Best held on to it before sidefooting a pass on to Cohen, who despatched the chance in style from 20 yards out.
