United Boss Neil McDonald handed Luke Joyce his third start for the club in midfield for the visit of Huddersfield Town, with Chris Lumsdon taking a place on the bench.
Kev Gall recovered from his rib injury enough to enable him to take a place amongst the subs, meaning that Danny Graham was drafted back in to partner Joe Garner up front.
Strong winds made football difficult in the opening exchanges but it took just 13 seconds for the visitors to win a corner when Schofield broke free down the left. Joyce was able to clear that one, but the Terriers were settling better and using the ball in midfield.
Johann Smith won a free kick when he was hauled down by Taylor in the 4th minute, but Jeff Smith could only find the wall as he aimed for the top corner.
Huddersfield carved the Cumbrians open in the 9th minute when Beckett released Schofield through the middle. He drew Westwood off the line and slotted the ball towards the bottom corner, only to find Danny Livesey covering the line.
Beckett worked the ball well again two minutes later when he played a one / two with Hayes, sending him clean through in the box once more. Westwood had followed the move and was able to get low to push it away for a corner.
Hayes and Schofield switched attention to the right wing in the 12th minute and some one touch passing left Collins to go on the overlap. He opted to go for the near post, smashing his 12 yard drive high over the bar.
Johann Smith was left to ask where the support was on 19 minutes when he beat his man and made it to the bye line. Cutting it back, it was left to drift to safety as Garner and Jeff Smith sat back on their heels as the ball came in.
The Terriers took the lead on 26 minutes with an incisive move that saw Schofield and Collins link up to take the United midfield out of the equation. Andy Taylor was then able to cross early, picking out Luke Beckett 10 yards from goal. His header was neat, dropping in to the bottom corner and leaving Westwood with no chance.
Carlisle tried to get back in to it quickly, pressing forward in numbers, and an Aranalde throw on the half hour found Danny Graham well positioned at the near post. The big striker won it, but his flick header dropped beneath the bar and nicely in to Glennon's waiting hands.
Aranalde went close himself with a 35 yard free kick that whipped inches over the bar off the shoulder of Jon Worthington, who had wrong footed Matt Glennon with his accidental intervention. Graham was on hand to win the header from the corner, but he couldn't keep it down and sent it high over the target.
Danny Graham was on the end of a Johann Smith flick in the 35th minute as Peter Murphy used the wind to help him dink the ball forward. A tight first touch brought a shooting chance, but he dragged the shot and made it easy for the big keeper to smother.
United kept working hard, and they got their reward for not letting their heads drop deep in to time added on for the first half when Jeff Smith floated a high free kick towards the back post. Graham and Livesey were challenging, and Glennon was left shouting at the Referee in fury as he lost control of the ball, putting it on a plate for Joe Garner to thump in to the back of the gaping net from less than 3 yards out.
Half Time: United 1 - 1 Huddersfield
Carlisle created the first chance of the second half when Aranalde pumped a long free kick in to box in the 51st minute. Garner won it, but his header had just too much on it and dropped behind the advancing Danny Graham.
Michael Collins had a speculative wind assisted effort shortly after, but United had another good spell of pressure when Raven teased two crosses in from the right after good holding play from Gall.
Another direct free kick from Aranalde in the 59th minute found Mirfin hesitant, and his poor clearance had Livesey trying to twist and shoot, but his rushed attempt was rising from the off and sailed high in to the Warwick.
Clear cut chances were at a premium in a game that had little space available for any player, but both Gall and Jeff Smith kept plugging away as they tried to make things happen down the flanks. Aranalde had a powerful free kick fly straight in to Glennon's hands in the 75th minute, and it took some sharp defending at the other end to snuff out a Luke Beckett break as the Terriers surged forward to follow up a Schofield long ball from the back.
McDonald went for a double substitution in the 79th minute, bringing Holmes and Lumsdon on, in an attempt to up the pace for the closing ten minutes.
Lumsdon was the provider of a great chance in the 83rd minute when he picked the ball up in midfield and slid it through to Garner. The young striker bustled his way through, but Glennon was out quickly, prodding it off his toe. Jeff Smith was on the follow up, but Glennon was up and was able to block the drive with his chest.
The Terriers had some good moments of their own in the 87th minute when an inswinging corner bounced around the box. It eventually fell for Schofield, but his right footed volley was cleared off the line by Livesey, who had held his position at the far post.
Joe Garner went in the book in the 88th minute for a loose challenge, and it would prove to be a crucial decision as the on-loan forward raced through on goal with seconds left on the clock. Poking the ball beyond Glennon, he hit the floor as he lost his footing, and Mr Mathieson decided that it was a dive, and produced a second yellow to send the unfortunate player from the field.
