Paul Simpson was forced to make changes from the team who drew at Notts County, bringing in Simon Grand at left back and Paul Arnison at right back after injuries to Zigor Aranalde and Dave Beharall.
From the first whistle it was United who created the chances. Hackney broke free on the left, after controlling a cross from Lumsdon and fired from the left off the penalty area, his shot deflected off Dolan for a throw in. Arnison tried a snap shot from distance that went wide of the post. From a throw in, taken by Arnison, the ball was flicked sideways across the edge of the box by Hawley to Hackney, whose shot went wide of the post.
Stockport's first real chance came in the ninth minute after a short corner, taken by Hamshaw, found Strachan who crossed to Easter at the edge of the box. Murphy made sure the striker had no time to settle and the shot was blazed high and wide.
United's first goal came in the 11th minute. Nade stole the ball from Stockport's midfieder with a great interception and fed the ball forward to Hawley on the edge of the area. With defenders round him Hawley used his strength and agility to turn his man and calmly power the ball low, past the keeper, into the right hand corner, 1-0.
Simon Grand was the first to go in referee Carl Boyeson's book, after being reprimanded for a tug on Hamshaw's shirt. The resulting free kick to Stockport was taken by Hamshaw and headed out of the box by Grand to be cleared up field by Arnison.
In the 16th minute, Grand, who was in the thick of the action all over the pitch, challenged for Arnison's cross with keeper Ikeme and took a knock. After a few minutes it was obvious he wasn't going to shake off the injury. Grand was replaced with Livesey, who slotted in at centre back with Murphy moving to the left back role.
United found the net for a second time in the 20th minute but Gray's header was ruled out by the referee.
A minute later Singh went into the book for a strong challenge on Lumsdon.
United were subjecting County to relentless pressure. Lumsdon sent a corner to the near post that was cleared for a second. This time Lumsdon sent the ball into the middle of the goal area, to be flicked on by Livesey before being cleared upfield. Hackney tried a speculative shot from distance that went wide of the post.
Crisp passing along the floor saw more and more chances. On 34 minutes Hawley fed a ball through to Lumsdon who looked to have the goal at his mercy but his powerful low shot from the edge of the box rebounded to safety off the post.
The last ten minutes of the half saw a further three goals in a period where the home side totally dominated. On 35 minutes Hackney, on the left wing, used all his trickery to beat his defender and get the ball to the bi-line. He put a good cross into the box, Hawley flicked the ball on to Holmes who headed the ball home from the right hand side of the box, 2-0.
United's third goal came only two minutes later in a somewhat bizarre fashion. Arnison sent a very high ball into the box and keeper Ikeme waited for it to drop into his hands, he misjudged the flight of the ball and it flew off the back of his hand into the net. 3-0.
On 40 minutes Holmes doubled his tally with probably the best goal of the day. Nade sent in a cross from the right wing and the striker volleyed into the top right hand corner from11 yards, 4-0.
For the final minutes United players queued up to shoot, Hackney, Hawley and Arnison all sending shots just wide
Half time 4-0
After the break Stockport immediately made three substitutions, Malcolm, Boshell and Clare replacing Dje, Griffin and Williams.
Chris Lumsdon went in the referees book after a foul on Strachan, the resulting free kick, taken by Strachan, was easily caught by Westwood.
United carried on the second half as they had left the first, with relentless pressure on the Hatters goal. Arnison's ball into the box, touched on by Holmes, was cleared just as Hackney pounced at the far post. Some great work by Hackney in the box beat his defenders and the keeper, only for his shot to be cleared off the line. The ball rebounded to Nade, who skewed his shot wide from three yards out.
A speculative shot from Boshell, 25 yards out, was easy work for Westwood to gather. Boshell then tried to set up Easter but the striker's fierce shot powered just wide of the post.
On 69 minutes Hackney was replaced by O'Brien who gave the Hatters no respite, using his blistering pace to advantage against the demoralised County team.
The Hatters were awarded a free kick when Lumsdon fouled Hamshaw 20 yards out. Singh send a vicious curling ball over the wall, Westwood was ready and caught the ball low at his feet.
United's fifth goal came on 75 minutes. O'Brien ran onto a ball in midfield and sped goalwards, only for Dolan to put the ball out for a corner. Lumsdon sent a great ball into the box for Hawley to head into the net from the left side of the six yard box, 5-0.
On 80 minutes United made their final substitution, bringing on Murray for Holmes. Only a minute late Murray sent a cross into the box from the right wing. Hawley pounced and sent his shot low into the left hand corner from the right hand side of the box, 6-0 and Hawley's first League hat trick.
Boshell was the last to go into the book after a strong challenge on Nade. The free kick, 30 yards out, taken by Lumsdon, was parried by the Stockport keeper and cleared.
Arnison passed to Murray 12 yards out and his shot drew a good save from Ikeme who tipped the ball round the post, the resulting corner was cleared upfield. Into injury time and a pass by Malcolm to Easter at the edge of the area saw the striker send a vicious curling ball just past the post.
Just what the home fans needed, an emphatic win and a clean sheet. This was a good team performance with everyone working hard. A bad day at the office for the Hatters, but a great confidence booster for United.
