United reverted to the eleven that started against Northampton for this late summer's evening fixture at an impressive looking Gigg Lane.

Chris Lumsdon also came back, starting the match on the bench, with the Holmes and Hawley strike partnership resurrected in a bid to play in a more positive style than in the hard earned draw at Lincoln.

It was also the first run out of the season for the all red away strip, which is proving to be a popular hit with the fans.

The United support was winning the battle of the terraces with their non-stop singing and both sides responded to the noise with a bright start on the pitch, looking to get forward.

Holmes created an early opening with his dominant presence in the air as he nodded a Simpson free kick down for Hawley inside the box.  The United striker was smothered and Challinor was on hand to sweep it away.

A minute later Hawley himself turned provider as he cushioned an Arnison throw in to the path of Holmes.  He went for the early shot, wrong footing Edwards in the Shakers goal with a wicked deflection off Challinor.  Fortunately for the keeper it had enough spin on it to bring it back towards his out-stretched hand.

A lightning quick break from the visitors in the 15th minute had the Blue Army roaring in anticipation as McGill picked the ball up in midfield from Billy.  He raced towards the goal, drawing two defenders, and allowing Hawley to nip in round the back.  McGill provided a slide rule pass that brought Edwards rushing out of his goal, and it took a strong header from Hardiker to clear it off the line as the chip from the Carlisle marksman looked to be going in.

Carlisle were defending well yet again and Bury were finding it very hard indeed to get behind the stubborn Cumbrian back line.  Tipton and Newby were busy, constantly switching sides in an attempt to confuse their markers, but Livesey and Gray were having none of it.

The Shakers finally got a shot on goal following a better period of possession for them when Hawley fouled Barry-Murphy in midfield.  Hardiker lobbed it in to the box for Tipton to nod down and Newby was well placed to drive the loose ball at the bottom corner.  Williams watched in relief as it flew wide.

United went straight back on the attack and Hawley broke free to go one on one with Edwards.  He shot from 16 yards bringing a fine save, low to his left, from the sprawling keeper and Brendan McGill had his follow up shot blocked at the near post.

Bury had their best attack of the first half in the 29th minute when Tipton found Whaley on the right.  He raced to the bye line and cut a low cross in to the area.  Livesey had tracked Newby well and took the ball off his toe at the vital moment.

Hawley had another sighter from 23 yards in the 37th minute when Aranalde found him with an excellent 30 yard pass, but it came to nothing, and Nade also tried his luck from the same distance in the next attack, but the pressure just wouldn't pay off for the confident away side.

Paul Arnison somehow managed to improvise a cross from nothing in the 40th minute and it almost brought dividends as Nade challenged for it.  Edwards was on hand once more to gather the bouncing ball as it glanced off the big Frenchman's head.

Bury's most effective player of the night was Simon Whaley on the right and he was left extremely frustrated as his powerful run and cross was left to drift harmlessly away as neither of his strikers gambled.

It was to be the last action of an entertaining half that had seen Carlisle dictate the pace.  More of the same was required for the second 45.

Half Time:  Bury 0 - 0 United

It was another lively opening with Bury probing from a corner that brought some amount of confusion for Livesey and Gray as it dropped between them in the 6 yard box.  Gray took control and made sure Tipton wasn't about to be left celebrating.

From the clearance United broke quickly as Hawley fed McGill on the right.  He beat three, battling his way in to the area and shooting across Edwards.  It was a decent effort but always destined to curl just wide of the target.

Scott delivered a teaser that had Newby interested in the 54th minute but it was just too far in front of him, and easy for Williams.  Nade showed his strength in the 55th minute when he shielded the ball onwards to Murray.  A first time pass released Hawley but Hardiker threw himself at the 19 yard piledriver, deflecting it over the bar.

The goal the away side had earned finally came in the 57th minute when Billy broke up a Shakers attack and found McGill.  He raced forwards and waited, watching the runs of his supporting players.  Raphael Nade appeared on his right, collected the pass and left the defence for dead.  With just Edwards to beat he produced a finish of real quality, drawing him out and chipping it over him in to the back of the net.

It was all fairly comfortable for Carlisle but they got a timely reminder that there was still work to do when a Gray header dropped for Newby to volley.  He caught hold of it but could only put it in to the keepers hands.

Lady luck smiled down on Livesey in the 71st minute when a huge penalty appeal was turned down as the ball brushed against his hand as he laid on the floor in the area.  Mr Moss decided it was ball to hand and waved play on.

United started to concede possession more as Bury tried to make home advantage count but it was comfortable, for the most part, as they sat on their lead.  A shot from Whaley that had plenty of sting was about the best they could muster but even that was an easy catch for Williams.

A frantic last few minutes saw chances at both ends and Paul Arnison produced his best at the back post as he headed a Newby cross to safety under real pressure.  At the other end Adam Murray found a weighted pass for Glenn Murray to race on to and he shot early, winning a corner off the thigh of Hardiker.

Bury had a late corner that flew past everyone, needing just a touch to bring the equaliser, but it was Nade that rounded the night off as he turned on a Glenn Murray pass and drove a left foot half volley inches wide.

This was an excellent performance from a Carlisle side who dominated from start to finish.  The midfield dictated the pace, the forwards won every loose ball and had the Shakers feeling constantly nervous, and our defence looked impregnable yet again.  The finish from Nade, it has to be said, was exquisite and Williams, in the United goal, had barely a save to make all night.  Two away games have brought four more points, and fully deserved they are too.  Good stuff.
