United manager John Ward gave us his reaction to the 4-0 victory at Kendal.

He said: "It was a good experience and it was good for the players to get some competitive football. It was also good for them to get 45 minutes and most of them did that. I'm really pleased with the way that we have gone about things tonight."

"I thought that Kendal did well against us," he admitted. "They put themselves up against a good League One side and, not only that, they treated the game in a good manner. I think the whole evening has been a winner for everybody. It's been a decent little crowd for Kendal, and we're delighted to be able to come here and help them out."

"I don't think we can read too much in to the goals at this stage," he added. "It was good to get them, but if they are doing that in August and September then I'll be delighted. There is a bit to go yet, and hopefully we'll keep going in the right direction. I've got a very determined squad, they get on extremely well with each other, but they all want to start for us in August. If we look at the keepers, they are good companions and they work hard together, but they are looking to get in to the team ahead of each other. It may all be good natured, but there is still a heck of a lot of competition, not just in that position but right through the club, and that's something that I want to nurture."

"We're off to Scotland on Monday," he said, "and training will step up another notch. The games start to come thick and fast after next week and, when we come back from the Partick Thistle game, we go in to playing two games a week as we head towards the Bristol Rovers opener. That means that things will be hectic. We will have to curtail the training a little bit after that, but next week will be a tough week, with a game at the end of it, and that will be a really good test for us. It's England v Scotland after all!"

"Our home friendly games are something for us all to look forward to," he concluded. "They are games where we are going to have to work really hard, and we are going to have to really go for it against Preston and Middlesbrough. The fitness work will come in to play for us during those games, because we don't want to be too far away from where these bigger clubs are at. They will certainly be good tests for us to see how close we are to teams that will be performing at higher levels than we are next season."
