The game against Hartlepool saw Danny Carlton deployed in an unfamiliar role on the right wing. We caught up with him today to get his thoughts on the performance:

"I don't mind where I play," he said, "because a shirt is a shirt. As long as I've got a jersey and I'm out there then I'm going to be giving it my best shot. Okay so it's not my natural position, but if that's where the gaffer wants me then I'll give it a go and be pleased to be out there, because it's better than being on the bench. I think if the manager comes up and says you're in goal, right back, up front, or wherever, then you put that shirt on and give it everything you've got for the club."

"Perhaps that game was one of those days when the result was more important than the performance," he told us. "The gaffer, and the players as well, have been very honest and admitted that our performances in the last couple of away games simply haven't been up to what we expect, and to the standard that we want. That's why we went out there to make sure, first of all, that we got the right result, and I think we got the performance at times to go with that, especially in the second half."

"To lose your last two games, and then come in to a home game against what I think is a very good Hartlepool side, and produce the result we have is great," he said. "When you add to that the fact that we were behind in the game twice, I think that tells you all you need to know about the characters we have here. People speak about team spirit, but that's what it's all about really. The lads aren't just going to give up and give in, we battled as hard as we could and in the end we've won the game."

"Hartlepool wanted to play football and, in a way, we prefer that. There's no doubt that at times in the first half they played very, very well, but I think that when teams come here to do that it also gives us a better chance to try and get it down and do our stuff too. I think the thing that won us the game in the end, though, was probably our finishing in the second half. We took our chances and that has tipped the balance in our favour."

"It goes without saying that you'd rather not go beind in a game," he added, "but when it does happen to you it simply means that you have to roll up your sleeves and try to keep on playing your football. I think that with the way we play, and with the players we've got, we're always going to get chances here and there in any game. We've got people like Danny Graham and Joe who have19 / 20 goals already between them, so it's just a case of whether or not we take those chances, and in the second half we did."

"Having said that I think our first goal came at a very important time," he admitted. "I suppose you see it in every league in the world that a team will score, and perhaps the foot comes off the gas and the opposition go up the other end and get it right back. I think we've probably even done it ourselves once or twice, but you simply can't because it will cost you in the end."
